Making Plans to Invite Guests

I'm going to try this bread recipe for a special event we're hosting on Friday.  (Note added 1/5/12: Try this recipe maybe since the previous one seems to be gone today.) I HAVE to try it, it sounds so homey and welcoming and well, just right for an evening with friends and neighbors and pots of soup!  Thanks to Alicia for sharing it at her blog in her post about a nice quiet New Year weekend.

What is the evening we are planning?  It all started with Christmas.  Years ago, the Millers started inviting us to their Epiphany dessert parties on January 6th.  What fun we had.  They would spend days and days preparing so many gourmet desserts.  We met their friends from all over the area and it was just a nice boost to the after the holidays blues.  Finally, this year, we decided it was time to try something like that for ourselves.  The Millers have moved away and we've missed that event, and them of course. :)  In the mean time, we've been trying to come up with a way to meet the neighbors. So, we've invited our friends and neighbors from our town only.  We know a lot of people in the surrounding region, but for this night this year it's just close-by folks.

The menu is refining itself, but begins with this first scribbling:
Chili
Corn Chowder
Black Bean soup
Corn Muffins
Yeast Rolls Dutch Oven Crusty Bread
Brown Bread
Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Icing
Caramel Popcorn
Ginger cookies.
Wassail
Coffee & Tea

Decor might be:
Spruce bows cut from our Christmas tree which is now out behind our house
Various sizes and shapes of candle holders from our son's rehearsal dinner back in October
Candles also leftover
Prints of favorite found images of the Twelve Days of Christmas placed here and there among the bows.

  1. This is a great idea! I got an e-mail re-iterating the general invite to our church's Epiphany Pot-Luck that I told you about. We'll probably go to that, but I'll be thinking of you and your wonderful plans!
Let me know expecially how the bread turns out! I have a cast iron dutch oven, and I'm interested in trying it, too.
